Post #10: Least We Forget/Happy Origami Day!

Well folks, it is a special day today as it is both Remembrance Day & International Origami Day. Today we remember the services and sacrifices of Canadians who fought in World War I and World War II. These brave men and women believed that their actions in the present would make a significant difference for the future. It is up to us present-day to ensure that their dream of peace is realized. On this Remembrance Day, by recognizing the courage and sacrifices of those who served this country we can start to recognize our responsibilities to work for the world-peace they fought hard to achieve.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. The word Origami means “ori” (folding) and gami (paper). If you’re feeling bold you can test your paper-folding skills and try your hands at folding an Origami Poppy for Remembrance Day! As most of us know, the remembrance poppy is an emblem of Remembrance Day or Veteran's Day in memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Click the link below for a video tutorial:

Now in Japanese culture Cranes are a symbol of peace, and thus often seen at places like war memorials or atomic bomb memorials. Several temples, including some in Tokyo and Hiroshima, have eternal flames to signify world peace. At these temples, school groups or individuals often donate these to add to the prayer for peace. The cranes are left exposed to the elements, slowly dissolving and becoming tattered as the wish is released. In this way they are related to the prayer flags of India and Tibet. Lastly, the origami crane is also thought to represent a long & healthy life. Cranes are also viewed as symbols of happiness, and signs of good luck.

According to Japanese legend, if one thousand paper cranes are folded, it is said that one's wish will be granted. A thousand paper cranes are often given to a person who is seriously ill, to wish for his/her/their recovery. They are often created by friends/colleagues as a collective effort (it is believed that the 1000 cranes must be completed within one year and they must all be made by the person who is to make the wish at the end). Another common use is for sport teams or athletes, wishing them victories. Cranes are a symbol of peace, and thus often seen at places like war memorials or atomic bomb memorials which ties into Remembrance Day significance.

For me the tale of the one thousand origami cranes was popularized through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was two years old when she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. Sadako soon developed leukemia and, at the age of 12 after spending a significant amount of time in a hospital, began making origami cranes with the goal of making one thousand, inspired by senbazuru legend. In a fictionalized version of the story as told in the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, she folded only 644 before she became too weak to fold anymore, and died on 25 of October 1955; in her honor, her classmates felt empathy and agreed to complete the rest for her which was 356 cranes to fold. In the version of the story told by her family and classmates, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum states that she did complete the 1,000 cranes and continued past that when her wish did not come true.

Why fold Origami Peace Cranes today?

Well many people worldwide fold paper cranes as a symbol of peace. Every year thousands of people around the world fold paper cranes as an expression of hope for a world at peace. They fold cranes in an effort to promote a world where people can live without fear. You too can give it a shot by clicking the following link:

I very highly recommend trying your hand at origami even if it’s making something as simple as paper-stars I have a jar full at home. I highly recommend giving this beautiful art-form a go!

For our customers who like the idea of Origami I would lastly like to mention a very special Origami-Die from Sizzix. We would be happy to order it in for you as I again have in my craft-stash and plan to do something very special with it in the near future. Stay tuned…

Meanwhile, thank you so much.

*Inserts creepy greeting here*

Well it’s safe to say that summer is over and at this point my blood-type has basically become pumpkin-spice. I’m such a sucker for fall particularly Halloween themed stuff! I love it all… There’s been a lot of talk in the past few years about the explosion of Halloween products in the scrapbooking industry but one factor limiting Halloween’s market, is that it doesn’t have quite the international appeal of Christmas but to spooky-oriented folks like myself fall-season the most wonderful time of the year!! Allow me to start off by saying I became excited about the fall-possibilities this year as soon as our Autumn Sunset collection from Prima Marketing arrived in-store!. Nestle up to the autumnal warmth of beautiful butterscotch, elegant linen, and rustic bronze in Frank Garcia's Autumn Sunset Collection. This line combines delicate florals and classic gingham patterns line the scrapbook papers, foiled accents, stickers, and harvest flowers. Perfect for capturing pumpkin picking, warm apple cider with family, and every pumpkin spice latte of the season. You can truly appreciate the beauty of harvesttime with the Autumn Sunset Collection was a good indication we had lots of lovely fall-themed paper lines to look forward to. Needless to say I am so excited to share some of my favourite finds and projects with you!!

So What are some trends for Halloween 2019?

The biggest trend visible this Halloween season that I have noticed is the integration of pinks, turquoises, and other very non-traditional colours into the Halloween colour-palette. The integration of these colors started actually started a few years ago with the introduction of “alternative” Halloween collections done up in entirely purples and greens. These options were being offered as diverse possibilities to the traditional black and orange that we grew up with. This has now progressed to the use of pinks, pale oranges, purple tones and bright greens being mixed right in as part of the 21st century Halloween standard. An example of this can be seen in the collection Candy Carnival from Doodlebug Designs as well as the Happy Haunting Collection by Simple-Stories. This particular collection from Simple Stories does a good job at combining pinks into the traditional Halloween spectrum. If you ask me both of these collections would be fantastic options if you have little monsters in your family, they offer more of a cutesy & less of a spooky option for Halloween projects.

And now, moving onto American Crafts. The company’s DCWV brand appears to have included some “photo realistic” style paper designs in their Ghost Stories Collection. Some wicked-fun punchouts in its die cut Halloween DieCut collection and they do an unbelievable job at combining pinks purples, turquoises and holographic sheets in the Witches Brew collection. Needless to say these 3 collections have kept me so enamoured and busy I have already completed some card-projects including elements from them. I also completed 2 mini-albums (for my friend with similar tastes & myself) along with some decorations for my ever-changing purse… I adore so much about these paper-lines from the inclusion of skulls, skeletons, and the dark adult theme papercrafts that you can create with them. These collections are just perfect for my sense of horror-style. I had so much fun combining different pieces from all the DCWV packs into my projects.

Now, Vintage style is in almost complete absence from many traditional Halloween paper-lines. I have noticed the presence of vintage style growing in the industry as well as being very popular in-store over the last year or so, but many of the brands traditionally associated with vintage in the industry (Prima, Stamperia, Graphic 45) don’t really do Halloween releases. However, I will mention Ciao Bella has a lovely Autumn collection & if you enjoy St. Bernard puppies allow me to say this line could be the one for you!! Additionally, I did stumble across a collection by Steven Duncan & Carta-Bella called Happy Halloween. It is nice as it reminds me of old 1950’s Halloween cut-outs, magazine adds, and decorations. Lastly, I should make mention of Simple Stories Autumn Splendor collection which is full of incredible details, textures and interactive elements.

During my research I also stumbled across many wonderful projects and ideas from one of our favourties Tim Holtz. He has just released a new stamp-set for this month consisting of adorable monsters and ghoulish quotes. Moreover, if you hop onto Pinterest and search Tim Holtz Halloween ideas you will likely become overwhelmed with creative option ranging from interactive cards, candy boxes & party favours, to display tins, to shadowboxes, and gift-tags. It’s a great jumping-off point if you’re looking for inspiration and ideas!

Lastly, I wanted to talk about the Halloween style of Reminisce who makes fantastic paper-collections in various themes but the best ones being spooky… We had a collection here in-store called Zombie Party, one called Halloween Night , and one called Very Strange Things all of which have received heaps of compliments from our shoppers. They have been such a big-hit it has been difficult to keep them in-stock. Reminisce also offers a gorgeous fall line called Glorious Autumn which makes me think immediately of apple-picking, playing in leaves, and other fun-fall-activities based on the colours and images included in this kit.

Please note that If you would like us to order you in any of the paper-lines I discussed in this blog-entry we would be happy to do so for you! Orders typically require about 7-10 business days to arrive. Feel free to email me at classycrafterliz@gmail.com if you have any questions. Remember, you too can join in the frighteningly good-times or be prepared for next season’s adventures! Post # 8: Camping Paper & Reminisce & Gone Camping Collection😊

So this summer I had actually made a point to order a few paper-collections in for myself to make work of some personal adventures this year. However, these paper lines are in my humble opinion too sweet not to share with you. We have been receiving such wonderful feedback from our customers who enjoy the outdoors and outdoor paper lines bringing S’more packages in for the store was a good idea! You too can celebrate the great outdoors with the woodsy Gone Camping collection designed by Steven Duncan for Carta Bella Paper. You can be one happy camper when you create scrapbook pages documenting your time spent in the wilderness with family and friends. So, get yourself some nature filled/campy paper crafting supplies and join me in the fun! Hehe

Next Time on Liz’s Blog: I will be discussing some of my favourite fall/Halloween paper-lines that have been released this year!🎃👻☠️🧡

Post # 7: Introducing, the Pineapple-Crush Paper-line from Heidi Swapp🍍💕

Fresh and Fun is the vibe of Pineapple Crush! It’s mix of cool watercolor washes, and the trendy tropical icons are the perfect escape to your favorite memories! Choose from a variety of vibrant-colours and beautiful patterns to start your next creative endeavours. You’ll love the vibrant colour scheme that is perfect for documenting your days of lying on the beach with your friends, or having a good time splashing around poolside!😎👙

I think it is no big surprise that Jen & I adored this young, classy, sophisticated, tropical-themed paper-line from the moment it first arrived in the store😻... Two Keywords: Flamingos & Heidi Swapp. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name Heidi designs a lot of cute home decor & simple to use project life albums, washi-tapes & journaling cards. She is one of the reasons I became interested in the art of the scrapbooking hehe🙃(BUT DON’T JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT THOUGH-CLICK HERE TO BROWSE YOURSELVES).

Well, I just felt so fortunate when I was asked to complete 6 cards to showcase the new line for the store. Upon discussing some of my initial ideas with Carol I challenged to use one sheet of the paper to do a minimum 3 & to incorporate my Pink Ink Designs Turtle into the mix🤔...

Needless to say, #challangeaccepted! I always like to use as much of my paper as possible when crafting so this seemed like a wonderful opportunity to also showcase how to use up scrap pieces to finesse the inside of a card-project.

Well in no time, my “too much genes🧬”may have gotten carried away on these cards they felt as if I was missing something. Upon reviewing my stash of goodies; I thought to myself what a great opportunity to show-off some of my favourite sassy, silly Backchat stickers from Dylusions. These quirky little stickers make fun sentiments for cards, layouts, & art journaling projects to name a few ideas🤪

I also had the opportunity to try the new Nuvo Stone-Drops which actually have a fine grit in the formula so they end up drying to look like a more textured-finish then the glitter, clear, pearlized, antique, iridescent, or other nuvo-drops that I have had the privilege of working with. I highly recommend experimenting with them if you have a chance to.

Ta-da!! So thank you for reading this weeks post & please join me in the fun while it lasts! Sadly, once this beautiful line is gone it most likely will not be coming back to the store... Next time you’re in, pickup a few fun sheets & prepare to share your own sunny-days. I suggest after you’re safely back home & in your crafty space grab yourself a Pinacolada or refreshing substitute, pretend you’re on a beach, & get to crafting!!🌴🍹✂️

“Meme-ember” until next week- Stay Scrappy y’all! *Also, feel free to send us your wildlife cards until August 31st & pictures of the amazing Heidi-swapp Pineapple Crush creations you come up with!!* Thank you for your support!!🍍💝

Coming up next week: Stay-tuned for my next blog post where I will be sharing all of my favourite camping & cottage themed papers-lines this summer with you!!🏕

Post # 6: Pink Ink Stamps – A beautiful display for your wild-side!! *Rawr*

I cannot get enough of these breathtaking clear stamps! With the feel of hand drawn artwork but without all the time and skills one generally requires for such beauty, these stamps can be used to create 3D elements to your projects. Fantastic for everyday use in card making, journaling, scrapbooking, fabric crafts and more. I especially love their wildlife and whimsical themes! For my personal project, I thought these stamps would be perfect for creating endangered animal greeting cards. I love giving back & its nice to do simple things like donate an egg carton or two now & again (...although ours usually go to crickets for our bearded dragon Charmander).

Photo-credit: Richard Harrison (c) 2019Nevertheless, here’s my pitch: wildlife rangers risk their lives to protect endangered species like tigers, elephants and rhinos. Sending thank you cards to these hardworking individuals reminds the rangers of the importance of their work and promotes productivity within their daily jobs. More productivity=More animals saved. Want to send the rangers a little token of appreciation for their hard work? Click the link below for additional details on how you can help! Feel free to drop off your cards at the store until August31st/2019 & we will be happy to ship them out for you!! I will post more information & a card I made up with one of the stores beautiful, sophisticated, summer paper-lines from Heidi Swapp... if you follow us on our Instagram you probably have an idea of what’s coming up!!

“Meme”while... I hope you can relate😅

Come & explore the California Coast with this fabulous new collection by Frank Garcia! Needless to say as someone who enjoys seahorses more than your average bear. I was beyond-thrilled when this paper-line arrived in-store and I was given the opportunity to play with it! It Features beautiful modern touches inspired by the coast and California, which makes this beautiful paper-collection perfect for displaying all of your vacation, traveling and summer memories. I was personally fortunate enough to experience a California trip a few years ago so I can’t wait to give this as a gift to my travel-companions/friends.  I simply can’t express to you how much I adore everything about this line! For my project I decided to create an I-Craft Garden View Album with a few personal touches of my own. For example, I incorporated some chalk paint to change the album cover and I added my own handmade embellishments such as paper flowers I created using the Heartfelt Creations Flowering Dogwood die.

Post #4: Ahh *sighs* The Bella cosmos line…

Add an inspirational feel to your craft projects using the Bella Cosmos Mantras Cardstock Paper. I was so happy when I stumbeled upon this collection searching for papers to make a friends birthday-card. With it's gorgeous use of blue and purple hues, this acid free cardstock paper features an array of positive mantras and self-affirmations. This collection is the perfect accompaniment for all your scrapbooking and paper craft needs for yoga-enthusiasts and crafters alike! It features unique Zen-like artwork which is ideal for posting words of wisdom, manifesting dreams, or to use to simply decorate your wall, fridge or space. To view the full range of cardstock, visit us online or in-store today. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do!

Post #3: We love the TriBlend 3-in-1 Alcohol Markers & Crafters Companion Stamps!!

The new TriBlend markers have a unique 3-in-1 design. Each marker houses three ink chambers, each delivering separate colour through a fine bullet nib.  These are perfect for on-the-go colouring, card sessions and more! Their Colouring System makes it easy for crafters and colourists to enjoy the super-smooth coverage and blended effects of alcohol markers. This is because inside of every TriBlend marker there is a perfect gradation of three colours, numbered from light to dark. The result when used is a smooth, controllable blend with beautiful shades that will allow you to colour and blend like an expert! The colours inside have been carefully developed to produce a smooth, controlled gradation so you’ll get the same result with no trial and error or guesswork. The multiple parts that go to make up your TriBlend Marker have each been precision-engineered before passing through an extensive quality control process. This ensures against leaks, dry-nibs or other defects throughout the life of the pen. I hope you will enjoy using them as much as we have been lately! Step 1: Start with LIGHT color and lay down a small amount of ink in the section. Note: blending works the best when the ink is still wet.

Step 1: Start with LIGHT colour to shade desired area. Start with a small amount of ink in a small section. Blending works best when ink is still wet. Step 2: use DARK colour overtop of light where you would like the darker shading to be. Step 3: next use your MID-TONE colour just over the top of the edge of th3e dark and into the mid section. Step 4: use the LIGHT-est colour again colour over the lightest portion of your image. Step 5: Repeat this technique in small sections for the rest of the image. Feel free to go overtop if the areas with the respective tones of additional colours.

We also really enjoyed using the Nuvo Tape Runner, the Art Alchemy Metalique waxes at the Notions Commotion event which we promptly brought back to the store for you to play with! Feel free to pop by for a browse or shop the markers and more section of our website.

Post #2: Notions Trip & Projects

Howdy folks!  Jen & I were so lucky & excited go on a mini-road trip this past spring to join the Notions Team in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We got to  explore and play with some of the newest Notions-Marketing products and tools at their warehouse! Along with that we were able to squeeze in some shopping, dining, socializing, and have some fun creativity-inducing experiences!

It was our first time attending the first-Annual Notions Commotion event!  It was here where we met some lovely scrapbooking peers and even made friendships with individuals who own stores from Michigan to Chicago. In between all of the planned activities we managed to squeeze in a wee bit of sight-seeing. Jen even managed to find us a one-of-a-kind coffee shop as well as a wonderful local Taco Eatery specializing in spicy margaritas to try! Additionally, for my first time I was able to experience the delicious Sonic and Olive Garden Restaurants. Needless-to-say between all of the thrilling experiences and the crafting fun, I am already looking forward to next year’s adventure! If you loved any of the materials that we used to create our projects feel free to contact us the store and we would be happy to bring them in for you!

After this trip we were hoping to do some in-store demos in the form of Show-And-Tell with some of the wonderful goodies we brought back. However, scheduling has been tight so we haven’t had an opportunity to do so. We have been pre-occupied shopping for new products and lines to bring into the store for upcoming months. I felt it was important to include links to a You-Tube videos that are available through the Notions Marketing site to give you an up-close peek at the endeavours we participated in.  Furthermore, I plan to discuss some honorary-mention products in my upcoming and future blog posts so please stay tuned!

I love to create layouts, cards and mini-albums and enjoy using vintage, colourful floral and natural sources for inspiration. I also love to show and share my passion for scrapbooking with others in the form of gift-giving and social-media posts about creative ideas. When I first started working with Carol & Jen at CLASS ACT, I slowly began to explore the awesome world scrapbooking, cardmaking and paper-crafting. I take pleasure in creating nice projects or keepsake items to share with others. One of my favourite go-to techniques to explore involve some form of mixed media. Sometimes it is difficult to keep myself on track with all of the fun products and techniques to try!  I also adore anything that shines or glitters... I’m basically a little magpie – Sparkles shine & bling are definitely my things. It’s very hard to spot a project of mine without a sparkle or some glitter snuck in where I can do so tastefully.

Some Fun Facts About Me:

  • I cannot craft without music, a podcast or a tv series I always enjoy having some background music or noise going (believe it or not, it helps keep me focused).
  • I started in the industry as a general art fan, who always enjoyed sketching, doodling, drawing, and painting. I also enjoy dabbling in colouring, and creative journaling, graphic art & tattoos.
  • I love to make art journals & draw but I rarely share my projects on social-media.
  • Instead of sending Christmas cards my parents would send out a newsletter they called “the Elizabethan Times”🥰
  • I am an avid fan of all things Disney, trolls, fairy-tales, history, and folklore.
  • I am engaged to the most wonderful man I know, who also happens to be Carol’s son. We met through one of my lifelong friends, Carol’s daughter Raychel. Through Raych I was able to explore my love for photo-albums and scrapbooking back in high-school.
  • For Richard and I,  the dog and all our beautiful fur-babies are huge sources of inspiration to us. We work hard so Balrog can live his best boxer life!

My better half.The Balrog!
